At 70 years old, Don Lemp has no plans to retire from the gleaming display cases of M. Lemp Jewelers, the Syracuse institution his great-grandfather founded in 1890. For over five decades, Lemp has been the welcoming face of the fourth-generation business, a role he lovingly describes as being “a counter guy.”
For Lemp, the profession is about far more than transactions. “You’re celebrating marriages, engagements, births, anniversaries — all these different significant moments that people invite you into their lives for,” he said. This profound connection to his customers’ milestones is a primary reason he remains so passionately engaged. He now jokes that his tenure is so long he is selling engagement rings to the children of his original clients.
The store, always located in downtown Syracuse, has called its home on East Fayette and Warren streets since 1971. While many jewelers fled to suburban malls in the 1970s, the Lemps stayed committed to the city center—a decision that has paid off as the area experiences a modern rebirth.
Lemp’s journey into the family trade wasn’t immediate; he once considered law. But part-time work in the store while attending Syracuse University captured his heart. He was drawn to the craft’s endless learning curve, from mastering diamonds to knowing “all the colored stones, from A to Z.” He also cherishes the deep relationships with his staff and the constant challenge of growing the business.
“I’d rather gallop in the corral than ride into the sunset,” Lemp remarked, embodying a spirit that ensures this downtown landmark will continue to sparkle for years to come.
