CCTA programs need a strategic C-suite case to drive growth and efficiency

Hospitals and health systems looking to grow their cardiac imaging volumes are being told that simply buying new technology is not enough. A growing number of advocates argue that coronary computed tomography angiography, or CCTA, programs will only succeed if they are framed as a strategic business priority for the executive suite, not just a clinical add-on.

The push comes as more cardiology departments face pressure to improve efficiency and cut costs. CCTA, which uses CT imaging to assess coronary artery disease, has been shown to reduce the need for invasive diagnostic procedures in many patients. But adoption has been uneven. Some programs struggle to get referrals, while others fail to secure the capital needed for scanner upgrades or dedicated reading time.

According to industry observers, the key is translating CCTA's clinical benefits into financial language that chief financial officers and chief operating officers understand. That means showing how a robust CCTA program can shorten patient wait times, reduce hospital admissions, and free up cath lab capacity for higher-revenue interventions. In some cases, early adopters have seen cath lab margins climb by as much as 40 percent, driven by better patient selection and fewer unnecessary procedures.

The message is not just about buying a new scanner. It is about redesigning patient flow, training staff, and building referral pathways with primary care and emergency departments. Without a clear case presented to the C-suite, these programs risk staying underused, leaving both clinical and financial gains on the table.
