The Healey-Driscoll administration has announced a $17.9 million investment aimed at strengthening the state's workforce and supporting local businesses. The grants will benefit 1,255 companies across Massachusetts, with a focus on training, upskilling, and retaining over 15,900 workers.
This funding is part of a broader effort to address labor shortages and equip employees with skills needed in high-demand industries. The grants are expected to help businesses remain competitive while providing workers with opportunities for career advancement. Officials emphasized that the program targets a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, and technology.
Governor Maura Healey stated that the investment reflects a commitment to building a strong economy from the ground up. Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll added that supporting workers and employers together creates a more resilient workforce. The grants are administered through the state's Workforce Training Fund, which has provided similar support in previous years.
Businesses receiving the funds will use them for customized training programs, often in partnership with local community colleges or vocational schools. The goal is to close skills gaps and reduce turnover, particularly in industries struggling to find qualified candidates. State labor officials noted that the program has a proven track record of helping both small and large employers adapt to changing market demands.
The announcement comes as Massachusetts continues to navigate a tight labor market, with many employers reporting difficulty filling positions. By investing directly in worker development, the state aims to create a more stable and skilled workforce that can drive long-term economic growth.
