Two new hotels are planned near the Maine Mall. Some local businesses aren’t happy.

Two new hotels are planned near the Maine Mall. Some local businesses aren’t happy.

A shopping plaza near the Maine Mall is set to be torn down to make way for two new hotels, a development that has stirred frustration among nearby business owners. The project, proposed for a site on Maine Mall Road, would replace a strip of retail spaces with a pair of extended-stay hotels. While the developer points to growing demand for lodging in the area, some local merchants argue the move will disrupt their operations and hurt the neighborhood's character.

The plaza currently houses a mix of small shops and service providers, many of which have operated there for years. Owners say they were given limited notice about the demolition and face an uncertain future. "We built our customer base here," one tenant said. "Now we have to start over or close." Others worry that the construction will drive away foot traffic and create parking shortages for the remaining businesses nearby.

Supporters of the project note that the hotels could bring more visitors to the area, potentially benefiting restaurants and retailers that survive the transition. Town officials have cited the need for additional room capacity, especially during peak travel seasons. But critics counter that the plan prioritizes chain hotels over locally owned enterprises. The debate highlights a familiar tension in growing commercial corridors: whether to favor new development or protect existing small businesses. A public hearing on the proposal is expected in the coming weeks.
