Some Pensacola Beach businesses seeing payoff from traffic increase but others are hurting

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A surge of visitors hit Pensacola Beach over the weekend, with nearly 28,000 cars passing through the Bob Sikes Toll Plaza on Saturday alone. That set a new single-day record for vehicle traffic, signaling a strong start to the summer season. For some local businesses, the crowds have translated into a welcome payoff. Restaurants and souvenir shops near the main public beach access reported steady lines and full parking lots, with owners saying the extra foot traffic has boosted sales compared to the same period last year.

But not everyone on the island is celebrating. A number of businesses located further from the busiest stretches say they are actually hurting. Owners in quieter areas complain that while cars are backed up for miles at the toll plaza, many visitors simply turn around or never make it past the first few blocks. Some shops and smaller eateries report a drop in customers, as the sheer volume of traffic discourages people from driving further down the beach road. One bar owner noted that the congestion is pushing potential patrons to stay home or visit less crowded spots. The mixed results highlight a growing divide between well-positioned businesses and those struggling to capture a share of the record-breaking crowds.
