Liberty High made its playoff opener count on Friday night, going on the road and taking care of business against Indianola in the first round of the Class 5A postseason.
First-year head coach Mitch Wieland said he had a good feeling about the matchup heading into the game, and that confidence was built during the week of preparation. While Wieland appreciated how his team practiced, it was something else he noticed this week that stood out to him. That feeling carried over into Friday's performance, where the Lightning handled the road environment and came away with the win to keep their season alive.
The victory moves Liberty High forward in the 5A bracket, where the competition only gets tougher from here. For a program led by a new head coach, getting a playoff win on the road is a meaningful step and a sign that the team is peaking at the right time of the year.
Liberty High will now turn its attention to the next round as it looks to build on the momentum from Friday's win and continue its postseason run.
