Watch Out for Door-to-Door Repair Scams This Fall

The Better Business Bureau is warning that scammers are going door to door offering fake or unnecessary roof, chimney, gutter and furnace repairs, as the weather turns cooler in the Chicago area.

These con artists often show up unannounced, claiming they noticed damage while working nearby. They pressure homeowners to act fast, saying the problem is urgent and will get worse if not fixed immediately. In many cases, the work is never done, is done poorly, or is not needed at all. Some scammers take a deposit and disappear. Others start a small job and then invent new problems to drive up the price.

The bureau advises homeowners to be skeptical of anyone who knocks without an appointment. Never pay in full upfront, and never pay in cash. Get written estimates from at least three licensed and insured contractors. Check reviews and complaint history before hiring anyone. Ask for references and verify that the company has a real local address.

Older adults are often targeted because they may be home during the day and may feel uncomfortable saying no. Family members and neighbors should check in on them and remind them not to make quick decisions under pressure.

If someone refuses to leave or becomes aggressive, call local police. Report suspected scams to the Better Business Bureau so others can be warned. A few simple steps can keep your home and your wallet safe this season.
