Veteran-owned business gifting custom fishing rods to Gold Star families

Matt Moore, who owns Hellbender Outfitters in Elizabethton, is building and giving away custom fishing rods to Gold Star families. Moore, a veteran himself, started the project as a way to offer something meaningful to those who have lost a loved one in the military.

Each rod is handcrafted and personalized with the name of the fallen service member. Moore says the idea came from his own experience and a desire to connect with families who understand that loss. He wants the rods to serve as both a tribute and a tool for healing, encouraging families to spend time outdoors.

The response has been strong, with requests coming in from across the country. Moore is covering the cost of materials and labor himself, though donations have helped him keep up with demand. He plans to continue the effort as long as there is interest, hoping each rod brings a small measure of peace to a grieving family.
