Polygon Labs expects its regulated payments business to reach profitability in 2027, according to CEO Marc Boiron, who framed the company's recent acquisition of Coinme as a strategic entry into a sector currently dominated by established players such as Visa and Stripe.
The company, known for its $POL token, completed the purchase of Coinme, a licensed crypto payments firm, as part of a broader push to expand beyond its blockchain infrastructure roots. Boiron said the deal gives Polygon immediate access to money transmission licenses and compliance infrastructure that would have taken years to build internally.
The payments unit will focus on settlement and remittance services, areas where crypto networks can offer faster processing and lower costs than traditional rails. Boiron acknowledged the competitive landscape, noting that Visa and Stripe have spent decades building merchant relationships and trust, but argued that demand for cheaper cross-border transactions creates an opening.
Polygon is not alone in pursuing this strategy. Several blockchain firms have acquired licensed payment companies in recent years to capture fee revenue from transaction processing rather than relying solely on token appreciation and network usage.
Boiron said the company is prepared to absorb losses in the payments division through 2026 while it scales operations and adds merchant partners. He declined to specify revenue projections but said the unit should break even on an adjusted basis the following year.
The acquisition closed after regulatory approvals in the United States, where Coinme holds money transmitter licenses in multiple states.
