Not everything in northern Minnesota is on fire. Many businesses are safe and open.

Not everything in northern Minnesota is on fire. Many businesses are safe and open.

As wildfires continue to burn across parts of northern Minnesota, local officials and business owners are facing a tricky communication challenge. While the flames have dominated headlines and sparked evacuation orders in a few remote areas, the vast majority of the region's resorts, restaurants, and shops remain untouched and fully operational. The problem, they say, is that tourists are assuming the entire Northwoods is in danger.

"We have a few hot spots, but this is not a disaster zone," said one chamber of commerce director in a community near the Boundary Waters. "People see smoke on the news and think they need to cancel their cabin rental. That hurts everyone."

The concern is real. Late summer is a peak season for fishing, hiking, and family getaways. A wave of cancellations could cripple small businesses that rely on a steady stream of visitors to make it through the winter. Civic leaders acknowledge a delicate balance in trying to get the word out that many vacationers should not cancel their plans. They want to respect the seriousness of the fires while also making it clear that most lakeside lodges, bait shops, and canoe outfitters are open for business.

Travelers are being urged to check local conditions before driving north. Most state parks and national forest lands remain accessible, though some trails and campsites near active burns are closed. For now, the message from the towns that depend on tourism is simple: come on up, but stay informed. The smoke is real, but so is the welcome.
