Minneapolis business committee approves Reign liquor license after mass shooting

Minneapolis business committee approves Reign liquor license after mass shooting

A Minneapolis city council committee voted on Tuesday to renew the liquor license for Reign nightclub, a decision that comes less than a month after a mass shooting outside the venue left nine people wounded. The approval, granted by the Business, Inspections, Housing, and Zoning Committee, allows the downtown club to continue operating while city officials and police work on a new safety plan.

The shooting occurred in the early hours of October 6, when gunfire erupted near the club's entrance following a dispute. Police have not announced any arrests, and the investigation remains open. In the weeks since, the city has faced pressure from residents and business owners to take action against the club, which has a history of violence-related calls.

During the committee hearing, representatives for Reign presented a revised security proposal that includes additional trained bargoers, metal detection wands, and a stricter dress code. The club also agreed to close by 2 a.m. instead of 4 a.m. on weekends for the next six months. Several council members expressed hesitation but ultimately voted in favor, citing the lack of legal grounds to revoke the license without a criminal conviction or a demonstrated pattern of code violations.

The full city council will take a final vote on the renewal next week. If approved, the new conditions will take effect immediately, and the club will face a review in six months to assess compliance.
