Multiple business owners in Arlington are counting their losses after a massive four-alarm fire tore through a commercial building on West Abrams Street Monday afternoon. One owner described the scene as a disaster, saying there is essentially nothing left to salvage.
Fire crews responded to the structure around midday and quickly called for additional units as flames spread through the attached storefronts. The blaze sent thick black smoke into the sky, visible for miles, and forced nearby roads to close for hours. No injuries were reported, but the damage is extensive.
At least half a dozen businesses operated out of the affected building, including a barbershop, a small restaurant, and a retail store. Several owners arrived at the scene to find their shops reduced to charred frames and rubble. One longtime tenant said the building was not just a place of work but a hub for the neighborhood, and losing it feels like losing a piece of the community.
Fire marshals are still investigating the cause. Officials say the structure is unstable and will likely need to be demolished. The Red Cross has offered assistance to employees who lost income, and local leaders have promised to help with recovery efforts. For now, the owners are left to sort through what remains and figure out their next steps.
