Harvard Business School explored European outpost after Trump’s visa threats

University administrators have quietly explored the possibility of relocating part of its MBA program to Europe, following the Trump administration's renewed push to bar international students from entering the United States. The discussions, which took place in recent months, centered on creating a temporary or permanent outpost that would allow enrolled students to continue their studies without facing visa complications.

The move comes after White House officials floated stricter immigration policies that would have effectively halted the issuance of student visas to citizens of several countries. While the proposal was never enacted, the uncertainty it created sent a shockwave through elite academic institutions, which rely heavily on tuition revenue from foreign nationals. At Harvard Business School, international students make up roughly a third of the MBA cohort.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the school's leadership considered partnerships with existing European business schools, as well as the possibility of leasing classroom space in cities like London or Paris. The goal was not to establish a permanent branch, but rather to have a contingency plan ready if the visa restrictions were implemented. The discussions were described as preliminary and have since been paused, as the immediate threat has subsided.

The episode highlights the growing tension between the academic community and federal immigration policy. University officials argue that restricting international students damages America's competitive edge, as many of these graduates go on to found startups or lead major corporations. For now, the European plan remains on the shelf, but the fact that it was seriously considered signals how fragile the relationship between higher education and the federal government has become.
