An open mayoral race in Rochester is drawing a growing list of contenders. The latest candidate to step forward is Joe Powers, a local business owner who runs a well-known catering and restaurant enterprise. Powers announced his bid this week, becoming the fourth person to enter the contest for the city's top job.
Powers brings a background in private industry rather than traditional politics. He has operated his food service company for years, building a reputation for community involvement and large-scale event management. In his announcement, he emphasized his experience creating jobs and managing a payroll, arguing that the city needs a leader who understands economic realities from the ground up.
The race is wide open after the current mayor decided not to seek reelection. The other three candidates include a city council member, a former school board president, and a nonprofit director. Each has begun laying out their own platforms focused on public safety, housing, and downtown revitalization.
Powers is expected to focus on small business growth and streamlining city bureaucracy. He has not held elected office before, but his name recognition from years of community catering could give him an edge. The primary election is set for later this year, with the general election to follow.
