Indian telecom giant Bharti Airtel is raising its stake in British and African ventures as it hunts for growth overseas. The company is increasing its ownership in key international markets, signaling a strategic pivot toward global operations where it sees stronger revenue potential.
Airtel already has a significant presence in 17 countries across Africa through its subsidiary Airtel Africa, which provides mobile, data, and digital services to millions. The new investment push includes raising its shareholding in its UK-based operations, likely tied to its partnership with British Telecom and other infrastructure assets. The move comes as India's domestic telecom market remains fiercely competitive, with only three major players fighting for price-sensitive customers. Average revenue per user in India has been slow to climb, making overseas markets more attractive for long-term growth.
The company has not disclosed the exact financial terms of the stake increases, but industry analysts see this as a calculated bet on Africa's rapidly expanding digital economy. Mobile penetration and data usage are surging across the continent, and Airtel is positioning itself to capture that wave. The UK investments, meanwhile, give the company a foothold in developed markets with stable regulatory environments. This dual strategy allows Airtel to balance risk while chasing higher margins abroad, even as it continues to defend its home turf against rivals Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea.
